Duncan rescued the pup who became Rin Tin Tin, brought him home to California, and later put him in the movies.

Author Susan Orlean's new book, Rin Tin Tin: The Life And The Legend, traces the history of Duncan and "Rinty," as Duncan called him, exploring both the career of a very famous dog and the relationship he shared with the owner who both adored him as a pet and turned him into a very profitable business. On Weekend Edition Saturday, Orlean talks to Scott Simon about some of what she discovered in researching this unusual partnership between a man and his dog.

It wasn't a coincidence, she says, that Duncan was the one to rescue a pup who had no one; he had spent five years in an orphanage himself as a child. Even when the same mother who had left him there came back to get him, she took him to live with her parents on an isolated property with no other kids around. He did, however, get a dog. So perhaps it's no surprise that later, on the field of battle, surrounded by the death of the war, Duncan once again got a dog.

And not just any dog, Orlean argues, but an actor — one who, in the silent era where no one could speak, was on par with human actors. She uses Clash Of The Wolves — the film Scott Simon calls "his Hamlet" — to point out that in addition to being a fine action star and athlete, Rin Tin Tin had a face that was "immensely expressive." The film required Rinty to play scenes in which his character, if it can be called that, believes himself to be leaving his pack to die. "You're really affected by the look on his face and his performance," she says.

But whatever you believe about whether a dog can act, Rin Tin Tin shared one critical quality with the human actors of his time: He could not live forever. But after he was gone, Duncan was determined to keep the legacy alive, and would give Rinty's progeny to people who told him they'd always dreamed of having a dog just like him.

The death of this particular dog set off a national response: there was a news bulletin that interrupted regular programming, and the next day, there was an hourlong broadcast about Rin Tin Tin that played across the country. What's more, rumors flew about the precise circumstances in which the dog died, perhaps even that he died in the arms of Jean Harlow. Orlean says Rin Tin Tin's death, in this way, was "just like every other Hollywood death; much legend surrounded it."

Duncan wrote a poem called "Rin Tin Tin," which captures some of what he admired so much about his dog. It's reproduced here as it appears in the original, which you will see in a photo below.

Alert and ready for my slightest word,Rin Tin Tin I so often watch you stand;Eager to serve me for that high reward-A smile, or just a light touch of my hand.

Deaf to allurements of those standing bywhen I am near, and deaf when I'm away.Forever overjoyed at my returnHowever brief or lengthy is my stay.

Believing in me always, tho I fail,Your trust you gave but once, and that to me.Your's are the qualities that men hold high,Strength and pride and love and loyalty.

Wherever led my path you'd walk my way.And gladly give your life my own to save.Enduring pain and hunger, heat and cold-And broken hearted die upon my grave.

A real unselfish love like yours, old pal,Is something I shall never know again; And I must always be a better man,Because you loved me greatly, Rin Tin Tin. I have been there though all the the devil worshiping days and the fall of TSR to the WOTC, with all the different editions. To this day I enjoy the gaming experience fully.

Now I know that with the 4th edition and bringing back the brand as just "Dungeons and Dragons" many hard core DnD fans choked and croaked at the current state of that franchise, for example: "what the fuck is Wizards trying to do to Dungeons Nd Dragons into a card game like Magic the Gathering, why ruin what Gary Gygax and Arunson created?" I have heard many such statements and I for one disagree. I love the new system as I love the 3.5 system that is now called Pathfinder. With the current game rules it makes so much more easy to bring people into this great table top gaming hobby, it connects people at the tale versus playing a video game.

With the Dungeons and Dragons system you teach someone how to play a great table top RPG, as they learn the game with the simple and efficient rules of fourth edition, you can the talk about the mechanic of 3.5 the Pathfinder system that allows more avenues of exploration. The work your way to true roleplaying rather the hack and slash. I do enjoy a good hack and slash though. <iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=Dnd3e-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=1601251505&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:right;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="right" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">epwaithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17540367328320420283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8331313867842500537.post-15866834140749610082011-01-25T14:20:00.000-08:002011-01-25T14:19:52.012-08:00Round 2: Vote for your favorite Archetypes!Check this out on paizo.com:
Round 2: Vote for your favorite Archetypes!
http://paizo.com/-dyo5lbt1

Sent from my iPadepwaithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17540367328320420283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8331313867842500537.post-34866521626745952992011-01-24T01:41:00.000-08:002011-01-24T09:39:59.506-08:00Woot To the WOTC DnD forumSo I was checking out the stats on my blog here and noticed that one of my referral sites was from the Wizards of the Coast DnD forum I just thought that was just so cool.epwaithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17540367328320420283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8331313867842500537.post-77192576318511116112011-01-24T01:16:00.000-08:002011-01-24T01:19:27.750-08:00The Inn of Delights<iframe src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=Dnd3e-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=0786954930&fc1=000000&IS2=1<1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="align:right;padding-top:5px;width:131px;height:245px;padding-right:10px;"align="right" scrolling="no" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" frameborder="0">

There is an inn of such wonder and mystery, it has become known as the Inn of Delights. The Inn is actually known by many names, in one town it is call the Blind Ox in others the Black Griffon or the Drunken Goat. The Inn of Delights is by it's very nature many inns.

Long ago a great wizard of many adventures and very profitable adventure's indeed. Decided it was time to buy himself an inn and settle to begin research in planar travels and gates. He hired a staff and set them to managing his inn. The inn it's self was not large totaling only 15 rooms a large dinning hall a a bar set apart from the hall, a large stable.

The wizard however found a way around the limited rooms by creating rooms in dimensional pockets. Guest would be given keys that attuned a door to one of these dimensional rooms. As time went on the wizard began buying other inns in different towns and cities linking these inns together. In this way the wizards was able to travel to different loctions for his research and components of exotic nature.

For the right price guest could travel from city to city swiftly to conduct business. As the years past the wizard began to be seen less and less and one day he just disappeared. The Inn of Delights has remained.epwaithttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17540367328320420283noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8331313867842500537.post-67385348896954244902011-01-20T21:53:00.001-08:002011-01-20T21:52:54.116-08:00Legendary Races: Cyclops (PFRPG)

Legendary Races: Cyclops (PFRPG)
RPGNOW.COM HOTTEST ITEMS | JANUARY 18, 2011
http://pulsene.ws/OhnK

Publisher: Purple Duck Games and nbsp; Cyclops are a degenerate race who have fallen from grace.
