Dungeons and Dragons and Pathfinder

I for one have been playing Dungeons and Dragons since the early 80's as I recall it could actually be 1979 specicfically the year Star Wars came out. I have been there though all the the devil worshiping days and the fall of TSR to the WOTC, with all the different editions. To this day I enjoy the gaming experience fully.

Now I know that with the 4th edition and bringing back the brand as just "Dungeons and Dragons" many hard core DnD fans choked and croaked at the current state of that franchise, for example: "what the fuck is Wizards trying to do to Dungeons Nd Dragons into a card game like Magic the Gathering, why ruin what Gary Gygax and Arunson created?" I have heard many such statements and I for one disagree. I love the new system as I love the 3.5 system that is now called Pathfinder. With the current game rules it makes so much more easy to bring people into this great table top gaming hobby, it connects people at the tale versus playing a video game.

With the Dungeons and Dragons system you teach someone how to play a great table top RPG, as they learn the game with the simple and efficient rules of fourth edition, you can the talk about the mechanic of 3.5 the Pathfinder system that allows more avenues of exploration. The work your way to true roleplaying rather the hack and slash. I do enjoy a good hack and slash though.

Woot To the WOTC DnD forum

So I was checking out the stats on my blog here and noticed that one of my referral sites was from the Wizards of the Coast DnD forum I just thought that was just so cool.

The Inn of Delights

There is an inn of such wonder and mystery, it has become known as the Inn of Delights. The Inn is actually known by many names, in one town it is call the Blind Ox in others the Black Griffon or the Drunken Goat. The Inn of Delights is by it's very nature many inns.

Long ago a great wizard of many adventures and very profitable adventure's indeed. Decided it was time to buy himself an inn and settle to begin research in planar travels and gates. He hired a staff and set them to managing his inn. The inn it's self was not large totaling only 15 rooms a large dinning hall a a bar set apart from the hall, a large stable.

The wizard however found a way around the limited rooms by creating rooms in dimensional pockets. Guest would be given keys that attuned a door to one of these dimensional rooms. As time went on the wizard began buying other inns in different towns and cities linking these inns together. In this way the wizards was able to travel to different loctions for his research and components of exotic nature.

For the right price guest could travel from city to city swiftly to conduct business. As the years past the wizard began to be seen less and less and one day he just disappeared. The Inn of Delights has remained.

Ultima Exodus for NES, Such Sweet RPG Memories...

Dateline 1987, I remember buying one of the coolest games ever; Ultima Exodus.  What I did not know at the time was that Ultima Exodus would shape me as a future gamer.

My first team was a Fighter, Paladin, Wizard and Cleric.  I had a Thief on the side too, which I occasionally called in for some covert activities.  As best as I can remember Ultima Exodus was the first game that gave you a LINE of characters.  Instead of seeing one person when you moved around the world you saw all 4 characters walking in a nice single file line.  I found this so freaking cool! I mean, dude, I could snake around and make it look like my Fighter in the front was talking to my Cleric in the back.  Yeah, normally I don’t think those two classes would have had much to say to one another, but I was bridging the class gap by putting them face to face.

The Thief is the guy in the up left corner who looks like a urologist.
Like Zelda, Adventures of Link and Dragon Warrior I was used to encountering some NPCs in towns, but Ultima’s had just about the dumbest ones ever.  I mean they rarely, like 10% of the time, had anything useful to say.  Some claimed to be the designers of the game, while others went on about liking cheese.  Oh, but there were one NPCs that really got under my skin.

"..and wipe your feet before entering my throne room."

Not sure why, but I had a thing against Lord British.  Maybe I felt he was all cocky sitting on his throne, not leveling up my troops when I felt they deserved it… but from time to time I would attacked his highness.  I first tried to overthrow the king early in the game, and then again later when I felt more prepared with better weapons, armor and spells.  If you have played any Ultima games you will know that Lord British is a GOD there and he has unlimited Hit Points.  After several ass whoopings I came to respect Lord British and even paid him such a honor that I would not ride my horses into the castle.
At the time this game was released I could not imagine anything better.  I mean it had it all.  It had different character classes and spells.  Different armor and weapons, a variety of monsters and crazy maze like dungeons… it was a real D&D style video game and I loved it.  You never forget that magical moment that you commandeer your first pirate boat and sail right into the maelstrom… Ah, the memories.

So during a late 1980’s summer I played and beat Ultimawhoppings Exodus.  I held that game in the highest regard for many years to follow.  I whistled the music, I even would start a new game from time to time just to cast the Repel or Undead Spells on some of the early level baddies.  A few years after it came out, I started a second serious game with all less character classes: Ranger, Lark, Illusionist and Paladin, but sadly I never finished.
When I start a game of Ultima now, using the magic of emulators, the music automatically takes me back to my childhood days playing the NES.  The overworld music and the combat music is just so addictive that I hum it in my sleep!

Corellon's Devoted

Channel Divinity By Robert J. Schwalb

Magic, art, renewal, and beauty—these are the gifts ancient Corellon bestowed upon the mortal world when Creation’s dew still lay wet across the land. It is said he himself planted the first forests. The greatest artistic achievements, the most brilliant paintings and heart-wrenching epics owe their inspiration to him. Corellon, First of the Seldarine, Protector, Creator of all Elvenkind, the Coronal of Arvandor is among the greatest gods in the Astral Sea and that which flows from his presence is wondrous in its glory, terrible in its fury.

Is it not said that Corellon sired the elven races? You have heard the tale where elves rose from his blood spilled by Gruumsh during that fateful contest where Corellon took the monstrous god’s eye. But have you also heard the tale in which Corellon battled the Spider Queen and cast her into the abyssal darkness? It is said elvenkind also rose from the blood she spilled. There is also the tale of how the elven people were born from those tears he shed during the times of the Triune Harmony, with the races rising from tears of sorrow, beauty, and mirth. What would you say if I told you all three tales were true?
